thwest monsoon season. and in this monsoon season, sometimes big storm makes 3-8ft waves but it can't expect so much. 3rd Beach which is call 'Play Ground' is the nearest surf point from Kota Kinabalu wich state of sabah. This '3rd beach' is the 1st beach which local surfer try night surfing. If you go more north which area call Kudat, you can get more big waves. From Dec - Mar is Northwest Monsoon season and swell comes in and 2-8ft waves is avarage. In this season, swell is blocked by island and coral reaf around Kota Kinabalu but northern part around Nexus to Kudat area is no problem. local surfer like to surf Karambunai which facing to Nexus Resort. In Karambunai, it is famous for south point which is left hander like point break. If tourist wants to surf this point, they must stay in this resort but room price is quite expensive. The room is quite big so if you share room with your friend, you can save some money. Nexus is about 30min from airport by taxi and it cost about $20-25. if you travel with group, you can charter boat too. you can charter boart $160/day from Kota Kinabalu Jetty. for your information, there are many backpacker or 3 star hotel in Kota Kinabalu. The most famous place Tunku Abdul Raman Park also has a surf point which call 'Midreaf'. But if you really want to visit the best place in sabah, i will recommend 'Kudat' which about 3hours from Kota Kinabalu. There are some surf points which call 'Ceasar Point', 'Ivans Point', 'Sid's Point', 'Tindakon' and few seacret point and you can try waves which is rich in variety (like beach break, point break). you can get all the point within 1 hour drive from kudat. most of the beach can go without notice but some area is not allow to go in. you can stay local village house as homestay. if you prefer to stay, I recommend Kudat Golf or Marina Resort.
